RENATE'S JOURNEY is a rare glimpse of the American Zone of Germany during that too often neglected period between unconditional surrender and recognizable recovery, four desperate years when the official document of occupation actually restricted recovery and American cigarettes had become an accepted medium of exchange.
Although the characters in RENATE'S JOURNEY are pure fiction, the basic story is not. Most of the background and many of the incidents are written from personal experience. In a world of continuing conflicts, the political, economic and emotional dilemmas depicted have metaphoric resonance and contemporary weight.
